Five Steps To Five Bars

  • Find the best 3G Coverage Spot

Find the spot in your home or office that has the best 3G coverage. This is typically by a window, and if you are in a multi story building, upstairs windows are usually better than downstairs windows.

  • Plug in the Window Unit

Plug in the Window Unit cord, and check to make sure that you can see at least 1 "bar" on the display. If you do not see at least 1 bar, try a different location. This may take a few tries.

  • Optimize the Window Unit

Try moving the Window Unit to a couple of different spots to see if you can get better signal; the more bars the better. Choose between the wall mount or snap-on support foot.

  • Find a Place for the Coverage Unit

Place the Coverage Unit in a convenient location at the other side of your home or office. Wait for the green “status light” on the side of the Coverage Unit to stop flashing.

  • Optimize the Coverage Unit Placement

Place the Coverage Unit as far away from the Window Unit as possible. The number shown on the side of the display gives you an indication as to the quality of the placement.

Additional Information and FAQs

What is Cel-Fi?

Cel-Fi is Nextivity's brand of self-configuring, environmentally aware, indoor coverage solutions. A Cel-Fi system consists of two devices. The Window Unit (WU) is placed in the area with the strongest received signal from the carrier network (signal levels as low as -110 dBm are acceptable). The WU comprises a transmitter and receiver which communicates with the cell tower. The Coverage Unit (CU) is placed in the center of the home, communicates wirelessly with the WU and “lights up” the interior of the house with significantly enhanced signal levels, thus enabling better quality calls and greater data throughput.

How do I know if my phone is 3G or 4G, and that I have 3G or 4G coverage?

The easiest way to see if your phone is 3G (or 4G) compatible and that you have 3G (or 4G) coverage is to look for the icon on the display of your phone. When connected the wireless network it will normally provide an indication of the type of service to which you are connected. If you phone displays an H, H+, 3G, or 4G icon, then you have coverage. If your phone displays, GSM, G, EDGE, or E, then you will need to try other locations in your home to see if your phone will register with an eligible H, H+, 3G, or 4G icon.

Do I need to have a broadband connection?

No. You just need a Cincinnati Bell Wireless 3G/4G capable phone and a power outlet next to the window that provides the best 3G coverage in your house.

What do I need for optimum coverage?

Tip #1: You need to have at least 2 bars of 3G coverage on the window unit

Tip #2: Make sure that the Coverage Unit is displaying an 8 or 9 for the best 3G coverage

Will the Cel-Fi only work on Cincinnati Bell's network?

Yes.

Will Cel-Fi improve my data speeds?

Yes. Data speeds can improve by 200% to 300%.

What frequency is used to communicate between the two units?

Cel-Fi uses channels from both the U-NII-1 (either 5.15-5.25 GHz OR 5.25-5.35GHz) and the U-NII-2 block (5.47-5.725 GHz) to communicate between the Window Unit and the Coverage Unit.

How far apart should the Coverage Unit be from the Window Unit?

The Coverage Unit needs to be as far as possible from the Window Unit to achieve an 8 or 9 indicator on the Coverage Unit. If the Coverage Unit shows a 5, move the Coverage Unit further away. Larger the distance between the two units will create better signal.
TIP: Once you have found the strongest possible 3G signal, do not move the Window Unit to another location to create more distance between it and the Coverage Unit.
TIP: If you home is a 2 story with a basement, if possible place the Window Unit on the top floor and the coverage unit in the first floor.
